Racing (ABR) Tour of Illinois/Wisconsin, ROTY & MAJOR Series

Racers came from California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin to race against the Chicago bicycle racers - on their home streets. Once again the Midway across from the University of Chicago in Hyde Park was closed down for the Monsters of the Midway Criterium. A flat rectangle course, you can watch the whole race from anywhere on the course, with two long east - west streets and two short north - south streets. Mostly smooth asphalt and one short section a memorial to the famous Chicago patched potholes. For many years the event was held on Mothers day and for last few on the Saturday before, this version was the Saturday after which probably accounted for the near perfect race weather.
The many age 18 and under Juniors were first to race at 7:30am. This gives the parents and Coaches time to wake up for their race later in the day. Matt Novak and Adam Kosela made a break, Nelson & Phillips made chase, Graham, Weston & Adam of Team Mob Squad made their own break from the field of Jr. 13-15. Jessica Prinner once again rides to 1st but Theresa and Megan are trying to stay with her.
Break attempts filled the Cat ˝ race. The pace was fast,
towards the end a few riders made the break work with ABD Fagundes out
sprinting UCVC Yezefski and Team Mack Strout. ABD Puffer unleashed his
patented sprint to take 4th with fast chasing Kelly, Delo and
Pearson leading the pack.
So there you are 6th with one lap to go, a
great position in the Cat 4 race, the speed winds up and on the back stretch a
swarm from the left and the right rides past you, from 6th to 26th
in moments. Well Kevin, you are in the middle, behind a mass and only a miracle
would have gotten you back to the front. Or you would need a patented Puffer
sprint and a team to open a gap.
The Officials started the Women 40+ just before the
Women Cat 4 but they were all grouped together before the first lap ended. The
sprint for primes was mainly between Tschampa and Berrigan with a few others in
the mix. At the finish you expect Berrigan, Powell, Tschampa, Heck and Myrick
to be the final sprint contenders but then there are the new faces such as
Soung, Powers and Jacobs who showed their endurance and fast sprint.
Most of the top area Women Cat 1, 2, 3 racers showed up for their event. Of the 18 racers, 10 have the capability of winning the race. The primes were up for grabs; who would win was anyone’s guess. The endurance racers could keep the pace high or start the sprint early, whereas the speedy sprinters could hope to hang on and be able to pass. Berrigan & Powell or Powell & Berrigan, and then there is Upshaw, Heck, Peithman, Tschampa, Haas & Palmquist. On the last turn Cole takes a spill splitting the field. At the finish line it is 1st DeWerd. Who? Julie is one of those experienced speedsters. (That clue was given at the start line when I heard an Official say that’s her name DeWerd, Julie DeWerd). Power sprinter Powell 2nd, speedster Upshaw 3rd and MTB ace Berrigan 4th and Triple X Christiansen 5th.
A fine day of racing, Congrats to all the racers. Big thanks to UCVC for another year of racing MOM.
