Monsters of the Midway Criterium is the cycling race organized annually by the University of Chicago Velo Club. It takes place on the Midway Plaisance, the boulevard between E. 59th and E. 60th Streets, in the neighborhood of Hyde Park, Chicago. The course is a 1.1-mile flat rectangle. We have races for all ages and levels of expertise. Check out the flyer! This year we have a separate women's cat 3 race, for all those ladies who are not quite ready to race with the elite. And if racing is not for you, come out and watch the spectacle. The schedule of races is here. Racing categories go from 1 to 5, 1 being the fastest riders. Fees and prizes
Total prizes over $2,000. Check out the
flyer. We will give two to three prime-lap prizes per
race, to be announced at the beginning of each race.
Race fees: $25, $10 for juniors (18 and younger). Race a second time for $15. Registration on race day only. Members of the University of Chicago Velo Club race free. For a speedier registration, we recommend that you bring your forms filled out and signed. Here's the Entry&Accident Waiver/Liability Release. And here's the annual membership application for an ABR license, and the application for a one-day license. We'll have forms on race day too. Thanks. Rules Race sanctioned by American Bicycle Racing, and part of the Tour of IL/WI series. All ABR rules apply. Annual or one-day ABR license required. Annual ABR licenses available: $25, $10 for juniors (18-years-old and younger). One-day licenses available for $5. People with one-day licenses must ride in the categories corresponding to their current USCF categories. People without an annual USCF or ABR license can race in the Cat 5/Citizens category only.
How do I
find my way to the race?
The race is being held on the Midway Plaisance (located in the park between 59th and 60th Sts.) from Dorchester to Ellis Aves. just south of the University of Chicago campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. The exact address is 1212 E. 59th St., Chicago IL, 60637. Here's a mapquest map. And a GoogleMaps map. The University of Chicago website also has a good set of maps that show details on both how to get to the University. We will set up the registration tables in the west courtyard of Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St. Ida Noyes' west courtyard is on the Woodlawn Ave. side of the building. It has a grassy central area and a covered portico on 3 sides -- because it is outside (though covered), you don't have to take off your shoes and you can bring your bike with you to registration if you wish. If you're driving: The race course will be closed beginning in the early morning, so there will be no traffic allowed onto the Plaisance between Cottage Grove and Blackstone Aves. We recommend that drivers exit Lake Shore Drive via the 55th St. exit and find parking somewhere between 55th and 59th Sts. If you're taking public transportation: The easiest way is to take the Metra Electric Line. Get off at the 59th St. stop, or at the 55th St. stop. CTA buses #6 and #10 also stop near the race course.
